Presentation of the ChâteauHaut Koenigsbourg
The initiator of this gigantic construction was Frederick of Hohenstaufen. The castle took root illegally on land he did not own. In its early days, the fortress was used to guard the Alsatian road from north to south. Later, the Dukes of Lorraine took possession of the castle. It later became the refuge of a band of brigands and burned down in 1462. Numerous modifications were made to the château, depending on the mood of its successive owners. Stormed by the Swedes, it finally caught fire during the Thirty Years’ War. Abandoned for many years, the castle, or what remained of it, was given to the German Kaiser Wilhelm II of Hozenzollerm in 1899. He restored the fortress to its original appearance, so that it could become a symbol of his empire’s grandeur. At the end of the First World War, the château was returned to France. Despite its many restorations, the château has retained its charm.
